Exam

Before the exam
At the exam site, the proctor will check that you have your photo identification. Your identification must match the name you used to register for the test. After checking on these things, the proctor will assign your seat and give you instructions for the exam. The proctor cannot answer any questions about the exam content. ***As of Jan. 1, 2024, the state of Alabama is no longer requiring a prelicensing certificate.***
exclamationNOTE
If you arrive at the exam site after the proctor has started the exam, or if you do not have the required identification, you will not be permitted to take the test. You will need to register for another exam online; please keep in mind that all tests must be scheduled seven days in advance. You will also need to pay the registration fee again for the new scheduled test.
During the exam
The exam is computer generated. All questions are in a multiple-choice format. Each question has four possible answers. You may skip questions without answering them. You will be able to go back and answer the skipped questions before submitting the test, if time allows. You will also be able to change your answers to any of the questions before submitting the test, and if time allows. Your exam score is based on the number of questions you answer correctly. Every unanswered question counts as incorrect. So, it is better to try answering these questions with an educated guess by eliminating the wrong answers.
The computer will give you automatic alerts to tell you how much time is left. When the time for an examination expires, you will be given a “final” warning, and the examination will be graded based on the questions answered when time is up. After completion of the exam, if time is still remaining, you will be able to review your answers.
Regulations and Procedures
It is very important that you read and understand the following rules:
- Rooms are under video surveillance.
- The following items are prohibited in the testing area: Bags, purses, paper, books, study materials, calculators, cell phones, laptops, tablets, food, and beverages.
- Test-takers may not leave the room during an exam without permission from the exam proctor.

- Scrap paper is not allowed.
If you do not follow all of these regulations and procedures, your exam will not be scored, your registration fee will be forfeited, you will be dismissed from the testing center and your name will be submitted to the Alabama Department of Insurance for disciplinary measures.

exclamationEffective April 1, 2015
Individuals who live in Alabama and want to be licensed as Producers, Adjusters or Title Agents need to complete a fingerprint background check. Please read about the details of this background check and other requirements for the license on the Alabama Department of Insurancewebsite.
Instructions for Obtaining Your License
After passing your exam, you must complete the Fingerprint background check. You should seek to get fingerprinted one day before applying for the license. Once you have completed the Fingerprint background check, visit the Alabama Department of Insurance website. Under Producers/Agents, click on apply for license, select producer (Individuals), scroll down to initial licensing process and click on online application. Complete the NIPR electronic resident licensing online application and submit Proof of Citizenship. Please allow three days for your grades to appear within NIPR.
After 5 days, check the Alabama Department of Insurance website to confirm license issuance. Under Producers/Agents click on licensee search and complete the form. Once your license is issued you may print your license from the home page.
exclamationEffective April 1, 2025
If you currently hold an active temporary license, your temporary license will no longer automatically convert to a permanent license when the exam grades are received by NIPR. It is recommended that temporary license holders take and pass their exam and complete the fingerprinting process at least ONE WEEK prior to expiration of the temporary license. Follow procedures above to check for and print your license. If your temporary license expired before your exam date: you will need to follow the above directions to apply for an initial license through NIPR.
